Brief History of the Sausalito Yacht Club
In
1942, the seven founding members of the Club were already junior
members of other yacht clubs in the area, yet they felt they could do
better by themselves. Although the oldest founder was three months
short of his 17th birthday, the young founders wanted to promote
yachting-- both sailing and cruising. From the beginning, the Club
sponsored races and cruises including week-long cruises to the Delta.
The
clubhouse stands today on what was, in 1957, the abandoned railhead for
the Northwestern Pacific passenger trains for the ferry to San
Francisco. Most of the piles the clubhouse sits on were salvaged from
the reconstruction of Highway 101 over Richardson Bay. With a sense of
pride and purpose, each member co-signed the construction loan and the
clubhouse was dedicated in September 1960. With membership growing,
the loan was paid off early.
The
sense of volunteerism and commitment that served the Club so well in
its early years has been an enduring quality that binds the members
together. Work parties finished and maintained the clubhouse.
Although volunteer bartenders and chefs sometimes consumed the profits,
the emphasis has always been on camaraderie with a common theme of
boating and salt air. While professional bartenders and chefs provide
outstanding service on weekends, there is no limit to the contributions
member volunteers make to the continuing management and maintenance of
the Club.
The
Club sponsors many races together with monthly cruises to other clubs
in the Bay Area. The SYC is active in the Pacific Inter-Club Yacht
Association (PICYA) and in keeping with tradition and commitment to the
founding members, the SYC sponsors a very successful, award-winning
Junior Sailing program.
